Environmental statistics in the Mediterranean countries - Compendium 2005
lunes, 10 julio 2006

This publication is the second environmental statistics compendium produced by Eurostat with data coming from the national statistics offices (NSOs) of the EU's twelve southern and eastern Mediterranean partner countries. It presents the data and the metadata collected within these twelve countries in the framework of the MEDSTAT-Environment project, including a whole set of general indicators plus more specific indicators concerning soils, forests, water, marine environment, biodiversity, atmospheric pollution and production and treatment of solid wastes. Certain tables help to make comparisons at a regional level, while others illustrate the historical evolution at a national level.

SCHOOL COMPETITION ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
viernes, 23 junio 2006

The European Commission has launched a school competition for young people to find a new name for the environmental monitoring system GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security). GMES will gather relevant data, for example concerning environmental pollution, floods, forest fires or earthquakes in support of public policy makers’ needs.

The Commission has now invited young Europeans to unleash their creativity and find a more accessible name for this important programme. With the support of the Committee of Regions, the first phase of the school competition has now officially started: an invitation to participate has been send to a large number of schools.

To enter, schools must register by 30 June 2006. Pupils will then have until 31 October to send in the name they have chosen. School classes from all 25 EU Member States, as well as Norway and Switzerland (members of the European Space Agency) can participate. In early September, those who have registered will receive the GMES school kit containing a leaflet for teachers, a poster for the classroom and a CD-ROM with a film illustrating different services of the GMES initiative (RAPID, IP/06/780, 14.6.2006).
